The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) is holding their 2016 American Mosaic Summit in San Diego from April 4 – 8, 2016.

Celebrate the Day of the Dead at Liberty Station. Bring out the whole family for this special event featuring open artist studios, galleries, shopping and entertainment throughout NTC Arts & Culture District at Liberty Station. It’s the only place to be! Meet artists in their studios in our historic barracks buildings and see their newest works, take home your favorites or commission a piece. All month, many altars to honor the dead have been created. You may see one in every building.

Dia de los Muertos Retablo Workshop: Honoring the Women of our Past. A Retablo is a small devotional folk art painting, sculpture or multi-media piece, traditionally using iconography derived from traditional religious art. Come out and design a Dia de los Muertos Retablo with your favorite Women from History and appreciate what marks they made in this world. 2pm

Kids get creative with Día de los Muertos arts and crafts including a scavenger hunt and make your very own Día de los Muertos altar! Learn about Día de los Muertos folk tales, stories and songs with Songbirds Music. Traditional Mexican pastries and hot chocolate will be served. This is a fun, memorable and hands-on 2-hour celebration that children 1 to 12 years old will enjoy. Space is limited so please pre- register today at Class begins at 10:00am. $35 per child, $20 per sibling.
* Children 1-3 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
• Children 4 and up may be dropped off for the celebration, but parents are encouraged and welcomed to stay.

Featuring Woman + Studio. Embrace your creative potential with this fun, no experience workshop for women. 5 – 7:30pm.

New Americans Museum • Suite 101 & 103
presents a Dia de los Muertos Deconstructed Altar Installation. A traditional altar installation in honor of Rita Hayworth curated by Dr. Jose Guadalupe Flores of Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, and Rita Hayworth expert, Dr. William Nericcio, Director of MALAS at San Diego State University, with collaborating artists and volunteers from both sides of the border. Both galleries will be open to allow guests to explore both the traditional and spiritual side of the Dia de los Muertos tradition, immersing themselves, literally into the altar, as well as taking away an educational experience. With this installation the museum hopes to demystify, and de-trivialize the sacred ritual of altar making on Day of the Dead, while celebrating the beauty of Latin American cultures. Bravo School of Art and Theatre Arts School of San Diego team up this summer to create two fun and creative opportunities for kids! Located in beautiful NTC at Liberty Station, these two schools offer full and half-day camps in which students can experience all facets of the arts. From painting to improv, weaving to musical theatre, students can GLOBE TROT WITH THE ARTS and DREAM BIG this summer!

June 24 – 28, 2013 / Monday – Friday / Ages 7 – 11
Join Bravo School of Art and Theatre Arts School of San Diego for this exciting, fun-filled week of creativity, imagination and unique experiences as campers travel around the world through the Visual and Performing Arts! Each morning, campers will embark on a theatrical adventure as they explore different areas of the theatre such as acting, improvisation, mask work, puppetry, stage makeup and more! Travel from the Kabuki theatre in Japan to Italy’s Commedia dell’arte to Shakepeare’s Globe Theatre. After an hour of supervised lunch and outdoor playtime in the park, head over to Bravo School of Art’s studio / classroom to continue the creative globe trotting. Visit the American Southwest, France and Italy, Africa and more with hands-on projects that may include mask making, shadow puppets, weaving, mosaic, drawing and painting and more.

Bravo School of Art and Theatre Arts School of San Diego collaborate to create a unique and all-encompassing creative experience for kids. Each morning, campers will engage in fun-filled theatre games and activities. They will DREAM BIG as they create characters, improvise and write scenes, and develop short one-act plays. After an hour of supervised lunch and outdoor playtime in the park, head over to Bravo School of Art’s studio / classroom to continue the creative journey. Your young artist will learn about the art of Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Klimt and Chagall. Their imaginations will be stimulated by their own interpretation of each master’s work as they explore each style of art. Campers will create their own artwork using hands-on techniques inspired by the master’s art. Using color pencils, watercolors, oil pastels, colored paper, paper mache, etc. projects may be drawing, painting, printmaking, paper craft, sculpture and more.

Theatre Arts School of San Diego offers theatre classes ranging from music/movement and creative play classes for pre-school age children to advanced acting and musical theatre classes for pre-teens and teens. Their mission is to teach young people the cornerstones of theatrical technique and training in a non-competitive environment in which the individual creative potential of each child is encouraged and equally balanced with his/her collaboration with the group. A solid foundation in the theatre arts is provided, where the focus is not only on the final product, but the process of artistic learning.

Join scenic designer Robin Roberts for this fun filled week of creativity and imagination with an emphasis on theatrical art. Boys and girls will design scenery and costumes, learn to paint a back-drop, make props, and explore what goes on BEHIND the scenes of a theatrical production. A classic fairy tale will serve as our “play”. Projects will involve drawing, painting and making 3-D sculptures. Don’t be a Drama Queen, sign up for camp and become a dramatic artist!
